Anne Sigaut told me that 2022 “had a much more tranquil growing season than did 2021 as the conditions were basically hot and dry for most of the summer. The bud burst was generous so we did some bunch thinning in certain vineyards. We began picking on the 4th of September and the moderately thick-skinned fruit was clean and ripe as potential alcohols averaged right at 13.5%. Yields were unusually large for us at between 40 and 45 hl/ha and remember that is with dropping fruit. I can only imagine what those who didn’t bunch thin brought in! We vinified as usual, which is to say lightly, though for the élevage, we reduced to the new wood to no more than 25%. I like the vintage because while the wines are ripe, they’re not too ripe and retain good freshness and terroir transparency.” Sigaut explained that they lost their parcel of the Morey 1er Charrières as a family member decided to abruptly break the lease so 2021 was the last vintage for it. Tasting note: A deft but not invisible application of wood suffuses the ripe aromas of cassis, poached plum and kirsch. The generously proportioned yet nicely refined medium weight flavors exude a subtle bead of minerality that adds a bit of lift to the sappy, seductive and slightly firmer finale. This should repay up to a decade of keeping.
