                                                       The Diplomat 2021

Elegant, ephemeral, and expansive. Showing exceptional polish in the glass and revealing mounds of juicy, crunchy red cherry fruit and a wash of compellingly sweet and savoury baking spices. An open-knit structure affords juicy, crunchy acidity to lift the deliciously pure red fruit. A blend of Cabernet with Merlot and Petite Sirah, the Merlot lends an almost claret-like quality to this sophisticated and seamless blend, which builds to an elegant medium-bodied finish of crushed red flowers and river stones. Jayson Woodbridge, the founder of Hundred Acre, purchased the David Fulton Vineyard in St. Helena on Fulton Lane, and a winery on site is now the home of Fortunate Son

                                                     The Mascot 2019

The Mascot is a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon made from distinct hillside vineyards; specifically, the younger vines of BOND, Harlan Estate, and Promontory. It started out as a small project shared among the family, winemaking team, and close friends. Drawing fruit from blocks of recently replanted vineyards, The Mascot shares a glimpse into the evolution of its parent estates: a youthful snapshot of their future.
The wine is beautifully supple with a broadly fanned aromatic spectrum and an effortless depth of fruit. From a center point on the palate, the 2019 vintage undulates outward in all directions. Gentle, velvety swells pause and fold in on themselves, their liquid whorls of refined tannin and gratifying acidity gliding across the surface of smooth curves.

                                          Bevan Ontogeny 2022

The 2021 Ontogeny Red Wine features lifted, slightly minty and vaguely herbal notions that impart a cool aspect to the wine’s ripe cherry fruit. Full-bodied, creamy and lush, it lacks the terroir nuances of the single-vineyard wines, but it remains delicious and easy to drink, with a bright, fresh finish.

Russell Bevan continues to make the wines for his eponymous label, which combines high quality with pricing that’s realistic for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon made by an in-demand consultant. We tasted the wines together at Russell’s residence just off Silverado Drive, sandwiched between a number of other Bevan projects.
